Use the tool below
This WebP converter takes JPG, PNG, or GIF and writes a .webp file. Convert to WebP when a photograph or graphic will live on a website and the PNG or JPEG container is heavier than it needs to be.
JPG to WebP and PNG to WebP are the same tool — pick the input, leave output on WebP. We encode lossy WebP at quality 90. PNG transparency is kept. Animated GIF becomes a still, not a looping WebP.
No account is required. Tool files last about two hours, then they are deleted. That is not the same as “no file size limit” — see limits if a huge batch fails.
How to Convert to WebP
- Use the widget above. Drop
.jpg,.jpeg,.png, or.giffiles. More than one file is allowed. - Output on this tool is already WebP. Leave it.
- Wait until the row shows complete. One error does not always stop the others.
- Download each
.webp. Open it in Chrome or a current Safari. If a client uses an old in-app browser, keep a JPEG or PNG beside it.
The page works in a phone browser. Desktop Wi-Fi is more reliable for a folder of catalog exports.
Need the WebP to reach a client after download? Send it with the homepage transfer. That clock is 24 hours, not two.
What Convert to WebP Actually Changes
WebP is a modern raster format with lossy and lossless modes in the spec. This page uses lossy WebP at quality 90 — a conservative default for photos and most web graphics.
For photographs, WebP is often smaller than a similar-looking JPEG. Google published averages around 25–34% versus JPEG on their test set. Your file is not their test set — compare download size to the source.
Unlike JPEG, WebP can hold an alpha channel. A PNG cutout can stay a cutout. JPEG would flatten it — that is PNG to JPG, a different job.
Official overview: Google’s WebP page.
Does WebP Keep PNG Transparency?
Yes. Alpha survives encode at quality 90.
A logo that must float on a colored header should not go through PNG to JPG. WebP or PNG is the right path.
Will the WebP Always Be Smaller?
Usually for photographs and heavy PNG photos — often a lot. Not always for tiny JPEGs that were already crushed, or for sharp UI screenshots where PNG was the right format anyway.
Resize first with the bulk image resizer if the pixel box is wrong. Encoding six megapixels you will display at 800 CSS pixels wastes time.
Is This Lossless WebP?
No. Lossy at quality 90. There is no slider and no lossless toggle on this page.
For pixel-perfect masters you will keep editing, stay on PNG. For one-off web delivery, quality 90 is the boring default I still use for hero photos.
When a WebP Converter Helps
A catalog or blog is serving PNG photographs because nobody recoded them. WebP shrinks weight without flattening transparency on cutouts.
A hero image is JPEG today and you want a lighter <img> for modern browsers — JPG to WebP is the usual hop.
You need smaller files and a transparent overlay — PNG to WebP, not PNG to JPG.
Going the other way for a portal that refuses WebP? PNG to JPG or keep JPEG from the camera. This page does not decode WebP back to JPEG.
When to Skip WebP
Email and Print Workflows
Many Outlook and desktop mail clients still mishandle WebP. Attach JPEG for email.
Print shops and older CMS upload fields often list JPG or PNG only.
Animated GIF Input
GIF is accepted here, but output is a still WebP — typical first-frame decode. If the GIF is the joke, keep the GIF or use a short MP4. Our GIF converter is stills-only too.
Legacy Browsers Without a Fallback
Safari 14+ (2020) speaks WebP. Ancient Safari and some embedded WebViews do not.
The textbook fix is a <picture> element: WebP first, JPEG or PNG second. Do not delete the JPEG master the day you ship WebP.
WebP vs Other Converters
Squoosh, Ezgif, and CloudConvert all emit WebP. The differences that matter are local vs server processing, animation honesty, and whether the copy promises AVIF or lossless in the same widget.
| Feature | This Page | Squoosh | Ezgif |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account | Not required | Not required; runs in browser | Not required |
| Where it runs | Server convert; ~2h delete | Local in browser; no upload | Server; uploads deleted after ~1 hour |
| PNG transparency | Kept at quality 90 | Lossy or lossless; you choose | Kept; quality slider |
| Animated GIF → WebP | Still only — not animated WebP | Depends on source; you preview | Can do animated WebP from APNG |
| Quality control | Fixed quality 90 | Full slider + codecs | Per-file quality factor |
| Batch | Multiple files in one job | One file at a time | One file per convert page |
CloudConvert queues free jobs and keeps history with an account — fine for format breadth, not the same as anonymous two-hour deletion. Squoosh is the right click for one file and a quality slider in the browser. This page is the boring batch hop: JPG or PNG in, lossy WebP out, ads instead of a signup wall.
Privacy, Signup, and File Limits
No signup. Open, convert, download. Ads fund the site. File bytes are not sold to advertisers. Policy detail: privacy.
Tool uploads are not a public gallery. Links are not meant to be browsed like a photo library.
Homepage sharing keeps files about 24 hours. This converter keeps them about two hours. Neither is unlimited storage. A very large upload can still fail on memory, timeout, or a weak connection. The honest cap story is on limits.
Common WebP Questions
Does WebP Keep PNG Transparency?
Yes. Alpha survives. JPEG would have flattened it — that is PNG to JPG.
Does Safari Open WebP?
Safari 14+ does. Older Safari and some in-app browsers do not. Fallback JPEG or PNG if those clients still show up in analytics.
Will Every File Be 25–35% Smaller?
No. That is an average from studies, not a receipt. Compare your download to the source.
Can an Animated GIF Become Animated WebP?
Not here. Output is a still WebP. For motion, keep MP4 or use a tool that honestly supports animated WebP.
Is the WebP Converter Free?
Yes. No account. Ads support the page.
Should WebP Be Used in Email?
Usually no. Attach JPEG for email. Use WebP on websites.
This tool sits in Converters. Need a lossless working file from JPEG? That is JPG to PNG — it does not invent transparency. Need a one-page PDF instead? Image to PDF.
