What Convert JPG to PNG Actually Changes
JPEG is lossy. The encoder throws away information it thinks will not be noticed. That is why a holiday photo can be a few hundred kilobytes.
PNG is lossless for the pixels it is given. Convert JPEG to PNG and those pixels are stored without another JPEG pass.
The PNG format can hold an alpha channel. JPEG cannot. Capability is not the same as filling that channel.
Does JPG to PNG Improve Quality?
No. Mushy JPEG stays mushy PNG. Block edges from a heavy save do not disappear.
The win is the next save. Photoshop or Figma will not keep stacking JPEG damage on a PNG working file.
Why the PNG File Is Larger
That size jump is expected. JPEG discarded data to get small. PNG keeps what is left.
A 400 KB photo often lands between 1 and 3 MB as PNG. If the goal was a smaller attachment, this is the wrong converter. Use PNG to JPG or WebP.
Does Converting JPG to PNG Make the Background Transparent?
No. Every JPEG pixel is opaque. The table, studio sweep, or white wall stays in the PNG.
A shop photo named logo.jpg will not become a cutout. Mask the subject in an editor, then export PNG.
